Osteogenesis imperfecta symptoms vary significantly according to type, so it is very difficult to predict what kind of symptoms or complications a person will have.
The characteristic osteogenesis imperfecta symptoms also vary greatly from person to person, even among people with the same type of the disorder, and even within the same family. In addition, not all symptoms are evident in each case.
Common Osteogenesis Imperfecta Symptoms
Symptoms of osteogenesis imperfecta typically include:
- Bones that fracture easily
- Short stature
- Hearing loss
- Discolored, brittle teeth
- Blue sclera (blue color in the whites of the eyes)
- Skeletal deformities of limbs, chest, and skull
- Scoliosis (curvature of the spine)
- Respiratory difficulties
- Weak muscles
- Excessive sweating
- Constipation
- Tendency to bruise easily
- Loose joints and ligaments
- High-pitched voice.
Please keep in mind that very few people with osteogenesis imperfecta exhibit all of these symptoms, and that the severity of each symptom can vary tremendously between individuals.
