Forteo and Breastfeeding

No studies have been conducted on Forteo and breastfeeding. Since the drug can be destroyed and inactivated by an infant's digestive system, it is not likely to cause problems even if it does pass through breast milk. Until studies confirm that Forteo and breastfeeding is a safe combination, however, it may be a good idea to avoid taking the medicine while nursing.

Forteo and Breastfeeding: An Overview

At this time, it is not known whether Forteo™ (teriparatide) passes through breast milk in humans. The manufacturer does not recommend that women breastfeed while taking the drug. However, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking Forteo if you are breastfeeding or thinking about breastfeeding.

Forteo and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?

No studies have been conducted on whether Forteo passes through breast milk in women. Even if the drug is passed through breast milk, it is likely to be destroyed and inactivated by the infant's digestive system because it is a delicate molecule that must be given by injection. However, until Forteo has been shown to be safe for breastfeeding women and their infants, it may be a good idea to avoid the drug while breastfeeding. The medication appears to increase the risk of bone cancer in rats, and young children (whose bones are growing) may be more susceptible to this risk.

It is important to point out that Forteo is not approved for premenopausal women, including women who are breastfeeding.
