Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by body image distortion. People with this condition have an intense desire to be thin and will engage in dangerous behaviors (such as self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas) to maintain an abnormally low weight. They believe that they are overweight even when they are extremely thin. Anorexia can cause a number of health complications, including heart failure, brain damage, and brittle bones.
