Anorexia, an eating disorder characterized by low body weight and body image distortion, affects 0.5 percent to 1 percent of the female adolescent population. It is identified by refusal to eat, repeated dieting attempts, excessive weight loss, and an intense desire to be thin. People with this condition believe that they are overweight even when they are extremely thin. Anorexia can slow the heart rate and lower blood pressure, increasing the chance of heart failure, and can lead to brittle bones that break easily.
