Anorexia is a serious condition that affects 0.5 percent to 1 percent of the female adolescent population, with an average age of onset between 14 and 18 years. People with this eating disorder have an intense fear of weight gain and may refuse to eat, diet obsessively, or over-exercise. The first step of treatment for anorexia may involve hospitalization to help restore a healthy weight. Treatment also includes individual psychotherapy, family therapy, and supportive groups.
