Anorexia is a type of eating disorder that affects 0.5 to 1 percent of the female adolescent population (although men can also develop the disorder). People with this disease have an intense and overpowering fear of body fat and weight gain, and may diet, fast, or over-exercise to maintain an abnormally low weight. Treatment for anorexia may involve psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, support groups, and hospitalization in some cases.
